Both of these models have the same engines and trim levels available, plus similar overall options. The defining difference between them is their size and how much room you get inside them, although both are three-row, full-size SUVs.

For starters, the 2025 Yukon measures 210 inches in overall length, with a 121-inch wheelbase, and is 81 inches in width. By comparison, the Yukon XL is 225 inches in length (more than a foot longer) with a 134-inch wheelbase. To see what this means, consider the amount of cargo space each model has behind each row from rear to front: The classic Yukon has 25.5 cu.ft. behind the third row, 72.5 cu.ft. behind the second, and 122.9 cu.ft. behind the first, while the Yukon XL has 41.5 cu.ft. behind the third, 93.6 cu.ft. behind the second, and 144.5 cu.ft. behind the first.

You can see that’s a significant difference worth keeping in mind when deciding which model is right for you. As far as passenger space goes, for the first and second rows, headroom and legroom are essentially the same in these two SUVs, but we see a big difference in the third row. The Yukon has just under 35 inches of third-row legroom, while the Yukon XL has almost 37 inches of legroom in the back.

Next, Consider How Much Power You Want

When shopping for an SUV, the engine might not be the most important thing to you, but it’s still worth considering. This is even truer when it comes to a large SUV like the GMC Yukon; these are full-size vehicles that need a lot of power. Fortunately, GMC understands this quite well, and you have three different engines available. The standard powertrain is a 5.3L V8 engine that provides 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. This engine (like the other two) comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission for a smooth driving experience whenever you hit the road.

If you’re looking for more power, then there’s an available 6.2L V8 engine that delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This is generally our favorite choice for anyone who demands the most from their vehicle and wants a large SUV that feels incredibly fun to drive. For something truly remarkable, there’s an available 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine that offers 305 hp and a massive 495 lb-ft of torque. You won’t find many SUVs—even full-size models—with a diesel engine available, making this an amazing choice to consider. We’ll admit that a diesel isn’t right for everyone, but if you’re interested in what it offers, then go for it.

Third, It’s Time to Choose Your Trim Level

Now that you’ve got a good sense of which Yukon you want and the engine that’s right for you, it’s time to choose between the five trims available for these SUVs—and, remember, the same are offered for both models. The Elevation trim is the starting point for the Yukon, with the standard engine and rear-wheel drive (RWD), though four-wheel drive (4WD) is available.

Bold 20-inch wheels are standard on the Elevation, along with black assist steps on the sides, LED headlamps with an animated lighting sequence when you lock and unlock the Yukon, and more. You get a power-programmable rear liftgate, standard; inside, you’ll find a gorgeous 16.8-inch infotainment display, an 11-inch driver screen, and a 10-speaker Bose CenterPoint Surround sound system, all standard.

If you’re looking for added luxury, then the Denali trim includes Magnetic Ride Control for a smoother ride, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 15-inch multicolor head-up display. You get perforated leather seating in the Denali, along with a wireless charging pad and more. For the ultimate luxury experience, the Denali Ultimate trim includes an Adaptive Air Ride Suspension, a panoramic power sunroof, power-retractable assist steps with LED lighting, and even GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving tool.

If you want a family vehicle you can take off-road, then the AT4 trim comes with performance skid plates, a high-approach-angle front fascia, and an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case for better 4WD performance. Finally, Do You Want Packages or Add-Ons?

With these different trim levels in mind, you also have a number of available options and packages that you should consider when shopping for your 2025 GMC Yukon. Some of these options depend on the trim you’re looking at, of course, since that dictates the kinds of standard features that you get.
