That’s a great question but one that can be a bit difficult to answer, particularly since GMC offers so many fantastic trim levels for the Sierra 2500 HD this year. When looking at a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD for sale, you have seven different trims available, which can feel a bit overwhelming if you’re trying to compare them all and decide which one is right for you.

The Pro trim is the starting option that sets the standard features the rest of this lineup builds upon with a number of potential upgrades and enhancements. That makes the Pro easy to overlook since many of us are drawn to the shiniest, most advanced options, but doing so can be a mistake. One of our favorite things about this starting trim is that it gives you a huge number of options in terms of configuration for your truck. Although the Sierra 2500 HD is built to get some serious work done, it still has five different configuration options available. There’s a regular cab with a long bed (about 98 inches), a larger double cab with either the long bed or a standard bed (around 82 inches), or a spacious crew cab with the standard bed or long bed.

Here’s the catch though: not all of these configuration options are available with all seven trims for this truck. While the two crew cabs are offered with every trim, if you’re interested in a regular cab or double cab, then only the Pro and SLE trims are available. So right out the gate, the Pro trim gives you five different configuration setups to choose from; going a step further, you can also choose either two-wheel drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) for the Pro across these different configurations.

Many other trims like the AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate are only offered with 4WD, which further restricts your choices. To begin, you have the standard 6.6L V8 gas engine, which delivers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. This is a terrific place to start, and what’s particularly impressive is that it’s the standard engine for most other GMC Sierra 2500 HD trims. So, even if you’re interested in the remarkable refinement and advanced technology found in the Denali trim, this is still the engine it will start with.

If you’re looking for enhanced power, then there’s an available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine that provides 470 hp and an incredible 975 lb-ft of torque. This thing is a monster, and it’s the same turbo-diesel engine you can find on high-end trims; we love that you don’t miss out on power just because you want to keep things simple with the Pro trim.

Of particular note, however, is that the Pro has another version of this turbo-diesel engine available with an integrated Power Take-Off system. Accessible on the passenger side, this is perfect for powering external equipment, adding greater functionality that isn’t available on higher trims for this truck.

High Towing and Payload Capabilities

You might’ve noticed we didn’t talk about towing or payload when we discussed the engines on offer or the configurations available for the Pro trim. That’s because there are a ton of different factors that impact the kind of capability the GMC Sierra 2500 HD Pro offers, including the engine, configuration, and much more. The one thing we’ll say is that the added flexibility of the Pro means you can find a wide range of different weight ratings for this trim.

That can be a benefit if you’re interested in a particular level of capability, but you’re not sure what else you need in your truck. Ultimately, however, just keep it in mind and be sure that any Sierra 2500 HD Pro you’re interested in has a configuration and setup that gives you the kind of towing and payload you want from your truck.

Great Exterior Features to Enjoy

Looking at the Pro trim from the outside, we see a fantastic truck built to tackle anything you need, even if it’s not loaded with all the latest features and options. For starters, it has 17-inch silver-painted wheels wrapped in standard all-season tires, plus chrome front and rear bumpers and a CornerStep rear bumper that makes it easy to climb in and out of the bed.

Even though this is the starting trim, it still has animated LED projector headlamps with LED turn signals and daytime running lamps, which offer excellent visibility at all times of day. The only possible drawback is that the Pro trim comes with a standard manual tailgate, but the remarkable GMC MultiPro tailgate (which includes six functions to improve your truck’s overall functionality) is available, so keep that in mind.

A Well-Built and Functional Cabin

The interior of the Pro makes it clear this is the starting trim of the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD compared to what else is available. That being said, we still have a terrific pickup with a lot to offer, especially if you prefer the interior of your truck to be simple and straightforward.

There’s a seven-inch GMC Infotainment system front-and-center, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a six-speaker sound system. You’ll also find a 3.5-inch monochromatic Driver Information Center display that gives you added information with the six-gauge instrumentation cluster without overwhelming you with too much data.

We have a simple interior here with vinyl seating that includes a four-way adjustable driver’s seat and a four-way front passenger seat. You get a straightforward steering wheel designed to get the job done, plus power windows and door locks. We’re happy to see that the Pro trim includes remote keyless entry with a key fob, which makes it easy to get going when tired in the morning or after a long day of work.

Single-zone climate control keeps you comfortable in all sorts of weather, plus some upgrades like cloth seating, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and upfitter switches are all available options. This lets you enhance the features of your Pro without moving up to a higher trim that brings a lot more than you’re looking for.
