While a lot has changed within the automotive industry over the past several decades, there are a few basic principles that remain consistent. Among these is the desire from many people to own a vehicle that exhibits luxury and sophistication. With the SUV still riding an unprecedented wave of popularity among drivers, it only makes sense that the brands known for producing vehicles for those with refined tastes would take their skills and apply them to the segment. Many of these offerings are known for coming from across the Atlantic Ocean from brands such as BMW, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz.

But the newest contender in the field of the luxury SUV isn’t built for another continent but our very own. In recent years, the lessons in luxury have been put into practice by Buick, which successfully adapted them to build a fleet of modern SUV models. This has resulted in a lineup of vehicles that have the refined sophistication of Cadillac with the consumer-friendly pricing and practicality that many drivers look for in brands such as Chevy. The newest addition to that lineup takes the form of the redesigned 2024 Buick Encore GX.

The Encore GX has combined affordability and luxury since it was unveiled in 2020. This practice continues with the latest model, and Buick worked hard to provide more technology and excitement for the modern driver. Today we’re taking a close look at a vehicle that embodies all of the practicality and cost-effectiveness of a subcompact SUV but stands up to competing European luxury models when it comes to comfort and convenience.

    Three Powertrain Options

Now, we mentioned practicality and cost-effectiveness for a reason, and much of this has to do with the powertrain that Buick has equipped this luxurious vehicle with. Always with a keen eye for the ever-changing needs of consumers, the Buick Encore GX comes with two available engines, both of which are turbocharged and fire on three cylinders for maximum efficiency. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Encore GX, but all-wheel drive is available for drivers who are looking to have a better commute during bad weather or tackle dirt roads on the weekend.

The standard powertrain offering that Buick brings to the table takes the form of a 1.2L engine that propels the vehicle forward with the benefit of 137 hp. A larger 1.3L engine with 155 hp is available for those who seek a little more kick in their commute. Both engines are paired with a standard continuously variable transmission, providing smooth shifts when driving within city limits. However, if you choose all-wheel drive, then the 1.3L engine is upgraded to a more robust nine-speed automatic transmission.

Testing conducted by the EPA shows favorable fuel economy in all types of driving. When equipped with front-wheel drive, both engine options are rated for 30 MPG combined and 31 MPG on the highway. The only difference between the two is that the 1.2L offers 30 MPG in the city while the larger 1.3L offers 29 MPG in the city. However, if you choose all-wheel drive, then the 2024 Encore GX is rated for 26 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway for 27 MPG combined. This means you don’t have to sacrifice fuel economy for elevated performance. Both powertrains will save drivers plenty of money in fuel bills.

  • Interior

    Forging Its Own Path

The redesigned 2024 Buick Encore GX has an exterior that’s enticing and attractive. However, the interior of the vehicle is just as impressive and allows the Encore GX to stand up against its European rivals. As with many vehicles that represent the Buick brand, the cabin of the Encore GX is anchored by its infotainment screen. Measuring eleven inches, this display provides drivers with access to the refined technology that accompanies Buick’s luxurious offering.

Placed in the center of the dash adjacent to an eight-inch digital instrument cluster, the large infotainment display creates a unique aesthetic. The rest of the interior has an available two-tone color scheme that pairs Whisper Beige with Ebony accents. Or you can stick to the traditional solid Ebony for a more subtle look. Buick isn’t copying the tech features of luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz; it is forging its own path and stands out on its own quite nicely.

The standard entertainment futures are more than generous for those who are looking for a driving experience that’s refreshing and rewarding. The 2024 Encore GX comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has a wireless charging pad available on every trim. The standard stereo system has six speakers, and active noise cancellation makes outside distractions become a non-issue while you’re cruising. Buick gives you more for your money and still manages to encapsulate the practical features of an SUV. For instance, the 50.2 cu.ft. of storage space and fold-flat front passenger seat mean you can easily transport large items securely.

  • Safety

    Staying Safe

Since its introduction on the market, the Buick Encore GX has consistently been awarded five-star overall safety ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As anyone who’s even remotely involved with the automobile industry will tell you, the most important aspect to look at when deciding on a vehicle always comes down to how safe it is. In this day and age, every manufacturer is implementing new features that enhance the driving experience and provide additional oversight when you’re traveling to your destination.

The standard driver-assist features that Buick equips the Encore GX with are generous. In an age where many luxury vehicles have their best options hidden behind by a hefty price tag in the more expensive trims, Buick makes more features standard with the Buick Driver Confidence suite.

    Improving Reaction Time

The biggest part of maintaining safety on the road is reaction time. While this is a skill that many drivers develop over time, not everyone is experienced in knowing when and where to employ the evasive maneuvers that prevent a collision from occurring. Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking are both standard on the 2024 Encore GX and are in place to provide oversight in reacting to an adverse situation.

Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also standard and essential in keeping you safe, as well as the other drivers and pedestrians you share the road with. Following Distance Indicator will help you maintain a safe distance from the drivers in front of you, which is another factor that aids in maximizing reaction time. You’ll also have access to OnStar, one of the most helpful security and theft recovery tools available.

For additional oversight, there are other features that are available to maximize safety when you’re behind the wheel. Perhaps the most enticing of these is Adaptive Cruise Control. One of the most popular driver-assist features to arrive in recent years, this system improves on standard cruise control by automatically adjusting your cruising speed to account for slower-moving vehicles in front of you. HD Surround Vision is also available and recommended for drivers who call the city home.
